One Happy Coffee is a family business run by Barrington and Sara. Our love of Jamaican coffee goes back long before the shop.
Barrington was born in the 1970s. His great-grandfather, Pappa Sammy, grew and made Jamaica High Mountain coffee, and Barrington’s mother tells him that when he was a baby, Pappa Sammy would put a little coffee to his lips.
In Pappa Sammy’s day, every step was done by hand: the cherries were pulped and the beans dried on zinc over a wood fire, parched in black Dutch pots, beaten in a mortar, drawn through a cloth coffee bag and drunk from condensed-milk tins. The first, strongest draw went to the older folks; the second, gentler draw was for the children.
We don’t grow or roast the coffee ourselves. We choose it from the Jamaican estates and roasters named on every bag, and we stand behind every order. Blue Mountain coffee sells itself. We just make it available.
