Before we made the journey up the Blue Mountains, we stopped for a cup of coffee at the lodge. In Jamaica they say Blue Mountain coffee is ripened in the clouds, and up there you understand why: cloud and mist settle over the ridges most days, on the steep slopes where this coffee grows.
People often ask us what "shipped from Jamaica" really means, and whether it matters. So here is the whole journey, from those slopes to your kitchen, and an honest look at how it reaches you.

The short answer: Authentic Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee shipped from Jamaica is grown in the Blue Mountains, certified by Jamaica's coffee regulator, then roasted and sealed in Jamaica by the estate or roaster named on the bag, and sent straight to you. Nothing is repacked along the way, so the bag you open is the bag that left the island.
The journey, step by step
1. Grown on the steep slopes of the Blue Mountains
Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee is grown on the steep slopes of Jamaica's Blue Mountains, in the cool, cloudy air that slows the coffee cherries as they ripen. That slow ripening is a big part of the smooth, gentle cup the coffee is known for.
The farms are small and the hillsides are steep, so there's no room for big machines. Above them all is Blue Mountain Peak, at 7,402 feet the highest point in Jamaica. Our daughter made the climb to the Peak, and many of the mountain photos on our site are hers, including this one of her at the Peak sign.

2. Picked by hand, cherry by cherry
Coffee cherries don't all ripen at once, so pickers return to the same trees again and again, choosing only the ripe red ones. It's slow, careful work, and it's one reason the coffee costs what it does.

3. Pulped, dried and graded
The cherries are pulped to free the beans, which are then dried, rested and sorted. The beans are graded by size and quality. You'll sometimes see peaberry on a label: a single, round bean that forms instead of the usual pair, found in only a small share of the harvest. Wallenford Peaberry is one of them.
4. Inspected and certified
Before any coffee can leave Jamaica as Jamaica Blue Mountain®, it is inspected and certified by Jamaica's coffee regulator, the Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA). That control is what protects the name, and it's why genuine Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee is one of the most closely regulated coffees in the world.
5. Roasted and sealed in Jamaica
For the Jamaican brands we carry, roasting and packing happen on the island, by the estate or roaster named on the bag. Jablum, for example, is roasted and packed at the Mavis Bank Coffee Factory, and Wallenford is roasted and packed by one of the oldest estates in the Blue Mountains. The bags are sealed for freshness right there.
6. Shipped to your door
From there, the sealed bag is sent on to you, unopened and unchanged, until the morning you open it. For Sara, one of those mornings was a cup on a Jamaican beach.

Why "shipped from Jamaica" matters
There are three good reasons people look for coffee shipped from Jamaica:
- Nothing in between. The bag is roasted, sealed and labelled by the Jamaican producer. No one repacks or relabels it on the way.
- You know who made it. The estate or roaster is named on the pack, so you can see exactly where your coffee came from.
- It's the coffee Jamaicans drink. You're getting the same bags you'd find on the island.
Coffee roasted elsewhere from certified green beans can be genuine too. But if you want coffee that is Jamaican from the tree to the bag, this is how you get it.
What delivery really looks like with us
We like to be clear about this, because nobody likes guessing when their coffee will arrive.
- Many of our orders ship directly from Jamaica. Some coffees are also stocked in our Florida warehouse, depending on availability. It's the same sealed Jamaican bag either way; Florida stock just reaches US customers sooner.
- Every listing shows its delivery time right under the price. Some listings arrive in 3–5 days; others ship from Jamaica in 7–15 business days. Coffee that ships from Florida usually takes about five days.
- We ship worldwide. If you're outside the US and have a question about delivery to your country, just ask.
- Our free sample ships from Jamaica. It's an easy way to see the whole journey for yourself.
Keeping it fresh once it arrives
The coffee is sealed in Jamaica to protect it on the way. Once you open it:
- Keep it in an airtight container, away from light, heat and moisture.
- Don't keep the bag you're using in the fridge, where it picks up moisture and smells.
- Buy whole bean if you can, and grind just before you brew.

A taste of how it used to be done
Coffee has always travelled a long way in Jamaica, even when it only went from the hillside to the kitchen.
Barrington's mother tells a story about his great-grandfather, Pappa Sammy, who grew and made Jamaica High Mountain coffee the old way. He pulped the cherries, dried the beans on a sheet of zinc over a wood fire, parched them in a heavy black Dutch pot, beat them in a wooden mortar, drew the coffee through a cloth coffee bag, and served it in empty condensed-milk tins that got so hot you had to learn how to hold them. The first, strong draw went to the older folks; the second, weaker one was for the children. When Barrington was a baby, Pappa Sammy put coffee to his lips. That, he says, is where his love of coffee began.

Today's journey is faster and far more carefully controlled. But it's still the same idea: good coffee, made in Jamaica, shared with the people you care about. You can read more in our story.
